Grandma's Pie Crust

Ingredients

  • (4 cups) Flour
  • (1 1/2 tsp) Salt
  • (1 Tbsp) Sugar
  • (1 1/2 cups) Lard
  • (1/2 cup) Ice Water
  • (1 egg) Dozen Large Eggs
  • (1 Tbsp) Apple Cider Vinegar

Directions

Per her wisdom, Grandma's recipe makes 4 crusts for 2 pies. She always makes one right away, then freezes the other 2 so they are ready for her when she wants to make another pie. It's a great idea if you're making pies for holiday parties or other celebrations one after another!

Here it is:

  1. Combine flour, salt, and sugar. Mix the lard into the flour mixture until you get pea size bits.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat together the ice water (make sure it's ice cold), egg, and apple cider vinegar.
  3. Add the beat mixture to the flour mix until combined.
  4. From there, roll dough together, then cut into 4 equal parts. Grandma says in half, then in half again on each is the best way to do it. If you're going to use two right away, go ahead and roll them out. If you're saving them for a later date, wrap them in plastic wrap or some other freezer safe container, then set in freezer until next time.
  5. From there, you're set! Pie, pie, away! Fruit pies, meat pies, whatever kind of pies your family likes best! :)

For baking apple or other fruit pies, Grandma bakes in increments:

15 minutes at 425 degrees, 15 minutes at 400 degrees, then 15 minutes at 375 degrees, and finally 15 minutes on convection. Of course, individual recipes may vary.
